The PS5 and the Pre-order Rise

So the release of the PS5 is no surprise to anyone at this point. When I first got a look at it, I funnily enough thought it looked slightly similar to an Xbox 360.

For those who haven't seen this nostalgic piece of tech, this is an Xbox 360. Created in 2005/2006, it shipped out 1.5 million during it's release year. While the first rendition did suffer from the notorious "Red Ring of Death" (known for being a failure in the system and causing it not to work anymore), it was still a successful machine to behold.

Now to compare the looks between our old classic and our new curve. While putting them together, you can most definitely tell they're different, I do feel the curves are slightly similar, as well as the shape of the controller. A downside to this magical device is the fact the curves just seem counter productive. It came with a stand... a stand of all things!! This means one of two thing:

  1. It can't go on its side

  2. It functions better at that angle

Both of these things will be annoying storage wise.

But that's not what we're here to talk about. Today's blog is to do with how popular this gaming system is.... so popular that every major pre-order around the world is sold out!

Yes, I am not kidding you. If you were to go to your local game shop (GAME over here in the UK), then there's at least a 95% chance they'd tell you the pre-orders for this were sold out. Like any good company, they advertised their newest golden child, and had memes made of it by the fandom (reminding me of the cheese grating meme for the Apple Computer).

This realisation hit that the world of gaming consumerism has just increased over time was from a subscription in my email inbox from DailyBits.

If you're unaware of them, DailyBits are an email subscription (that have recently made a website, great for them!) that keeps you up to date on any gaming news and deals that are on at the time. While I do look at the news and the official sources for certain information, I end up getting my all round knowledge to stay on top of everything with my daily email from DailyBits.

Here's a link to their website if you're interested in subscribing to them, they're honestly really fun to read - https://dailybits.news/

Back on track, one of their more recent articles had a list of where the PS5 was able to pre-ordered... and this is the chart for it.

Not gonna lie... that's a lot of sold outs. It's just crazy how the consumers of gaming (myself included) end up wanting the latest things just to keep up with our favourite series, going so far as to claim their consoles at higher prices only to have it quicker than others. As I don't have much money (poor student life doesn't leave much), I never pre-ordered this, meaning the likelihood of getting this console in particular will be a minimum of 6 months after its release (only if the price goes down, that is).

Games had been announced a while back (on one article by NME, their article is from the 13th October), such as Assassin's Creed, GTA V (again), and even Lord of the Rings - Gollum. While the games haven't sold out yet, the bigger titles will most likely be put on digitally, so they'll never run out, which is the beauty of today's gaming.

While they provide everything needed, it just baffles me how strong the community has gotten around getting the gear and staying in the know with everything, alongside selling out of everything before it's even been released. Since it releases on November 12th, it's only a stone-throw away before the major reviews on a £450 console come out too. Let's hope all the hype for this is truly worth it.

I wonder if they'll release Kingdom Hearts 4 on this one day
